Evidence & Evaluation
What this is based on, and what it isn't.
We believe credibility comes from being clear about what is known, what is informed by research, and what still needs to be demonstrated.
Emotion Pathway® is evidence-informed and evaluation-led. It draws on established research and practice across areas including trauma-informed care, emotional regulation, working-memory processes, psycho-sensory approaches, eye movements, sensory stimulation and early intervention.
That does not mean the existing research on those areas is direct evidence for Emotion Pathway® itself.
What informs the programme
Research, practice and where it's applied.
Research and practice foundations
- Trauma-informed practice
- Working memory and emotional memory
- Sensory and psycho-sensory approaches
- Eye movements
- Self-regulation
- Early intervention
Application contexts
- Workplace wellbeing
- Emergency-services and veteran wellbeing
- Schools and education
We use this evidence to inform programme design, not to make claims the programme has not yet earned.
Research that informs the programme
Emotion Pathway® draws on research across several areas relevant to emotional memory, sensory processing and trauma-informed practice.
The studies below help inform our understanding of those mechanisms and approaches. They are not presented as direct evidence that Emotion Pathway® itself is effective.
The effectiveness of dual-task interventions for modulating emotional memories in the laboratory: A meta-analysis
A meta-analysis of 53 laboratory studies examining how dual-task procedures, including eye movements, affect the vividness and emotional intensity of recalled memories.
View research (opens on PubMed in a new tab)A meta-analysis of the contribution of eye movements in processing emotional memories
A meta-analysis examining whether eye movements contribute to changes in the vividness and emotional intensity of emotional memories.
View research (opens on PubMed in a new tab)Human memory reconsolidation: A guiding framework and critical review of the evidence
A critical review of memory reconsolidation research, weighing evidence for memory updating alongside the limitations and ongoing debate in the field.
View research (opens on PubMed in a new tab)The efficacy of acupoint stimulation in the treatment of psychological distress: A meta-analysis
A meta-analysis of 18 randomised controlled trials (921 participants) on acupoint stimulation and psychological distress, which found an overall effect but could not determine whether it came from acupoint stimulation specifically or elements shared with other approaches.

An umbrella review of trauma-informed approaches across settings, setting out both the strengths and the significant gaps in the current evidence base.

What we are evaluating
Whether people can use it, and what happens when they do.
Our evaluation approach is designed to understand both whether people can use the framework and what happens when they do. We look at areas including:
- Understanding after training
- Confidence using the framework
- Frequency of use
- Changes in emotional intensity
- Barriers to use
- Follow-up experience after training
- Relevant organisational measures, where appropriate
Our evaluation also includes follow-up with trained practitioners at three and six months. This helps us understand how the framework is being used beyond the training itself, how often it is being applied, what practitioners are experiencing in practice, and where further support or refinement may be needed.
What we can say today
Real-world experience. Early programme-specific findings.
Emotion Pathway® has been developed from extensive real-world experience through The Manse Retreat, The Manse Method® and practitioner training. It is now being introduced through structured training and pilot activity — including a live school pilot, which you can read more about on our Schools page.
Early findings from that work are programme-specific and should not be treated as proof of effectiveness across all settings.
What we are not claiming
We do not describe Emotion Pathway® as evidence-based.
We do not treat evidence for individual component approaches as evidence for the programme itself.
We do not make guaranteed outcome claims.
Our aim is to build the evidence base properly, through transparent evaluation and continued learning.
Building the evidence base
Building the evidence carefully. Not claiming beyond it.
As Emotion Pathway® develops, evaluation will continue to inform how the programme is refined and where it is used. We would rather build that picture carefully than claim more than the evidence currently supports.
